COUNTY
COUNCILLOR REPORT
I am pleased that the Speed visor which I had lobbied for at Wainhouse
Corner has finally been installed, this will record traffic flows and speed data
during its temporary period of installation. Once the data is analysed this will
give county highways a good picture of any potential safety issues at this
junction. The road straightening at Helscott corner on the A39 has started, and
should be completed this spring. This had been one of the serious black spots
within the county. In my view other sections along the A39 still need upgrading.
New pedestrian warning signs have been erected at Dimmer which is one of these
poor sections where local residents have serious concerns. The additional second
homes council tax raised by the county council is continuing to be passed back
to the District Councils to help local need housing projects. The county
council’s community land trust umbrella is supporting some local schemes to
set up as community land trusts. This helps local parishes to develop schemes
according to their own need and to control the occupation of the properties. Two
such North Cornwall schemes, Blisland and St Minver have been supported by the
county council under the community lad trust arrangements. Pilot schemes for
improved fire crew rotas at retained fire stations have been proposed. If these
schemes are successful, then it is intended that they should be rolled out to
other retained fire stations like Delabole Launceston and Bude. This should help
to ensure a high standard of retained fire crew service in the rural areas of
the county where we do not have permanently manned fire stations. The County
Fire Brigade is urging householders to check their fire alarm batteries at the
same time as they adjust their clocks on the 30th of March. It has been shown
that many fires would have been less serious if fire alarms had been checked
regularly and kept working. County Councillor Bob Booker
NORTH
CORNWALL 50+ ALLIANCE
North Cornwall 50+ Alliance will be holding a meeting on 24th April 2008 from
6.30pm-8.30pm in the Parish Hall, Week St Mary.
All people living in W.S.M and Whitstone who are interested in attending
this meeting will be piloting a Branch to link with the above Alliance, and
hopefully when this proves successful other villages will join as well. Our aims
are to deal with local issues that concern us all. The issue of saving our Post
Offices will be on the agenda. From this you will see how very important the
voice of the people is when represented by the Alliance. Also the South West are
paying the highest amount for utilities, this has to be challenged. Pensions are
a major concern and have to be looked at now and for the future. To illustrate,
a meeting was held on 13th March in Plymouth. Present at this meeting were
executives of all the Bus Companies covering Devon, Cornwall and Plymouth, plus
officers of appropriate Councils and Councillors. Members of the Alliance and
other Forums of the 3 areas, all working together to obtain a 'Bus Service' that
is acceptable. I look forward to hearing from anyone who would like to discuss
any points mentioned. My name is Raymond Feltham and I can be reached on 01288
341051.
AGE
CONCERN
The Age Concern resource bus will be sited in the square on Thursday morning
the 17th April 10.30 till 12.30pm.
CELEBRATING
21 YEARS OF THE CORNWALL AIR AMBULANCE
Saturday, 3rd May 2008 at 7.30pm at The Rum Store, Carnglaze Caverns,
Liskeard. Tickets: £10 adults, £5 children, available on the door or from
Carnglaze (01579 320251)
Musicians and singers from the University of Southampton travel to Carnglaze to
raise money for the Cornwall Air Ambulance. The evening will include music from
the Southampton University Wind Orchestra (playing ‘The Padstow Lifeboat’ by
Malcolm Arnold and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’) as well as a short vocal set
from the Southampton University Chamber Choir (performing a selection of their
wide-ranging repertoire). The second half will see around 80 performers combine
to form the Charity Symphony Orchestra and Choir, who will take the audience on
a whistle-stop tour of the British Isles through music. Their programme includes
Handel’s ‘Zadok the Priest’, ‘Rule Britannia’, Walton’s ‘Crown
Imperial’ and Wood’s ‘Fantasia on British Sea Songs’, culminating with
‘Trelawney’, arranged by local composer Russel Pascoe. The Charity Symphony
Orchestra was set up in 2006 by former members of the University of Southampton.
It aims to give both ex and current students an opportunity to perform great
music, socialise and keep in contact with each other, as well as to raise money
for charity. The orchestra usually rehearse on the weekend of the concert and
have previously performed in London, Southampton and Bristol. CSO will be
conducted by Craig Lawton, who graduated from the University of Southampton this
year and who has worked with the Southampton University Symphony Orchestra, the
City of Southampton Orchestra and the Winchester Symphony Orchestra. There will
also be a charity draw during the evening, the prizes for which have been kindly
donated by businesses and attractions in the South West. The Cornwall Air
Ambulance is funded solely by voluntary fund raising, donations and legacies by
local people and members of the Air Care Lottery and with the support of local
businesses. The Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust is the Charitable Trust which
raises the funds to keep Cornwall’s Air Ambulance airborne. Costing around £1.5
million a year, the Cornwall Air Ambulance flies because of the generosity in
time and money given by the people of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. For more
information please contact Sarah Heard on 07779 927613 or by email: sarah9083@hotmail.com

MISSION
TO UMZIMVUBU - FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The Diocese of Truro has a ‘twinning’ link with the Diocese of Umzimvubu
in Eastern Cape South Africa. In order to give support to each other, there have
been a number of exchange visits with clergy and lay people travelling between
the two countries. In January of this year 14 people including Bishop Roy, from
Truro went to South Africa to provide moral support and to look at the various
aid projects which the Truro Diocese Fund for Umzimvubu supports. In February,
Revd Rob, Lesley Booker and Jenny Coltart went on a much smaller mission under
the auspices of Truro Diocese but with very specific local aid and unity aims in
mind as well. Our South Africa guide and chauffeur was Canon David Steven who
has supervised the link since its revival some 4 years ago. Also, as the film
presentation that we hope you will be able to see fairly soon shows, the
generous donations that many of you gave to Rob and to Lesley before the trip
were very well received by the people and the projects to which we gave them.
Surprisingly, in South Africa, what we might consider to be a small donation
goes a very long way to the relief of poverty and to raising people’s optimism
that somebody on the other side of the world who they have never met cares about
them. It was in so many ways a very humbling experience. Since our return from
South Africa, Rob and I have been very busy trying to catch up with the work
that we didn’t do when we were away and trying to organise our thoughts about
the things we saw on the trip to Umzimvubu. My own over-riding impression was of
the beauty of the country itself and the enthusiasm of the people that we were
introduced to. South Africa is huge and in the area that we visited, very green.
It resembles the up countries of our Lake District or Yorkshire perhaps.
Scattered widely over the hillsides are the tiny rural houses and groups of
family houses called kraals where the majority of the rural black population
live. The houses range from traditional circular huts with wattle and daub walls
and thatched roofs to oblong block built single storied houses with tin roofs.
Most houses have a garden or yard. Some grow their staple mealie maize and
cabbages and others have smaller areas outside which are kept swept spotlessly
clean. On the outskirts of the towns are densely packed RDP (Rural Development
Project) housing which is built by the government and given to the homeless rent
free. These houses have usually only two rooms and outside earth closets. They
are a serious problem as people with no work have to somehow make a living and
find a purpose to their lives. This increasingly results in a high level of
crime as the youngsters with no work help themselves to the crops and belongings
of their better off neighbours. There are few middle aged men in evidence. Many
of them go away to bigger towns or cities to work, many have died of HIV/Aids
and the families led by women and particularly older women are left to scratch a
living in the townships. Women work wherever they can and it is normal to see
them taking jobs in household service, in shops, as road workers, teachers and
selling fruit at the side of the road. They strive to pay for the school
uniforms that their children need and a great store is set by education as the
way to escape and to make progress in the world. We were frequently told that
women wanted their children and themselves to have the opportunity to leave
South Africa as they firmly believe that there is no future for them there. We
were asked in a semi-joking manner on three occasions to take small children
home with us. Our visit was widely welcomed and a great effort was made to
celebrate everywhere we went. Our guide and mentor, Canon David Steven said that
we received more enthusiastic welcomes than any of the groups that he has led
there before. We have a fine set of photographs and a video to share when we can
arrange a date for this and we have a long list of needs in many different
development projects that we want to promote with you all. Hopefully we can
encourage and help the people that we have met and also continue to feed money
into the Truro Diocesan Fund which contributes regularly to the Orphans and
Vulnerable Children’s Project and makes funds available for other projects to
apply for. We hope to be able to provide information and presentations for any
groups who would like to know about the projects that we saw and about life in
South Africa and we want everyone with relevant expertise to help us with advice
and fund raising. Our experience of people in South Africa is that they have
boundless enthusiasm and are prepared to work for themselves but that they have
a low opinion of their own abilities and potential. They need training because
during apartheid they were prevented from learning past age 15 and when at work,
always had a boss to tell them what to do. The vast labour pool meant that men
did not need to be versatile, they only ever needed to learn one job and there
was someone else to do the other jobs. The need for training is massive. People
do not have experience in solving problems for themselves. Sometimes it only
needs a simple suggestion to set a project back on track. So our message for the
time being is – watch this space! Revd Rob & Lesley Booker

WOMEN'S
INSTITUTE
Our Annual Meeting was held during the February meeting. The outgoing
President Chris Davies thanked the committee members for their work and also all
members for their support and attendance during the previous year. Members
elected Sylvia Johnstone as the new President, and Chris Davies as
Vice-President. The existing committee members were re-elected: Eileen Hicks and
Alison Douglas as Treasurer and Secretary respectively; Joyce Orchard as Visitor
Host and Catering Organiser; Micheline Smith, and Sue Koster as Press Secretary.
Sylvia thanked Chris for her hard work as President over the past eight years
and especially for keeping the group going despite a fall in numbers. However,
membership is now up from single figures to twenty-two. In March, members and
their guests celebrated the WSM WI 63rd Birthday with a lunch held at Trencreek.
Everyone entered into the spirit of the occasion by dressing for a Spring
Wedding in outfits from a charity shop. Indeed we were only lacking a bride and
groom to complete the event. Needless to say the food was extremely good and we
were very well looked after. Our new President Sylvia Johnstone presented Chris
Davies with a striking brooch as a gift in recognition for all her hard work and
efforts as President. Linda Cobbledick was ever ready with her camera and there
are some photographs posted on the WSM website. Next month’s meeting will be
held on 16th April at 7.30 p.m. in the WSM Chapel Schoolroom. Our guest speaker
Gerald Fry will give ‘A talk on the Bude Canal’. Visitors and new members
are always welcome.

ST. MARY YOUTH CLUB
I would once again make an urgent plea for female assistance with the Senior
section of WSM Youth Club on Monday Evenings (11 to 15yrs) 7:30 to 9:15pm. We
have a good team of male leaders and one female leader, but we do need to make
arrangements for cover so that we can effectively cater for unforeseen
occurrences. If you feel that you can spare an hour on Monday evenings, please
come along at the time above and join us one evening. I can assure you it is
good to see the youngsters enjoying themselves in a safe environment and you
would be doing a worthwhile community service for the village.

THANKS
I have now lived one whole year in this special little village: special
because it has been a place of welcome and friendship; and special because
hopefully it will always have all the amenities I will ever need. Special,
particularly, because when my daughter's bungalow (at Creathorne) caught fire on
February 15th, so many village people gave much needed help, otherwise for
example, on the day of the fire, 9 people and 2 dogs would have found 4 Church
Mews rather crowded. Accommodation, clothes and food were all generously given.
Such kindness in crisis meant a great deal and my family will be forever
grateful. David Clarke
