CONCERT
A very entertaining and successful concert was held in the church on Saturday 19th of April. John Hopkinson enthralled the audience with his skills on the organ. He was ably supported by Katie and Bethan who sang a duet, Katie also played 2 pieces on the clarinet, the church ladies choir sang 3 songs, Sarah played the cello accompanied by her fiancé Jason and Hilda recited 2 of her poems. Rev Rob was the compere for this varied program. Everyone had an enjoyable evening. £239 was raised for the hearing system which has recently been installed in the church. Many thanks to all who came and supported us.

LAWRENCE DENNER
Lawrence Denner, died 26th March 2008. Goodbye to a good and faithful friend. We moved here from Indian Queens 8 years ago and met this man who would give and do anything for anybody. He had a heart of pure gold and was in fact a gentle giant. With his death went part of Week St Mary as he was one of the true characters of the village. It won't be the same without him as I think all who knew him would agree. Rest in peace old friend. Alfie Quelch
Lawrence Denner who died in a tragic accident recently was known to almost all of us in Week St Mary. He lived at Greenleigh with his Aunt Doris, until her death a few months ago. Lawrence was a friendly giant of a man. Something of a character who would give help to anyone who needed it. We will all be the worse off in the village for the passing of this true countryman. Nick and Pauline Davies.
BUDE RURAL INTER-PARISH SHIELD 5-A-SIDE FOOTBALL

Hopefully we will have strong support from families and friends to cheer our teams on. If you are coming and have spare seats in your car, please let me know so that I can arrange transport for unaccompanied players. Stephen Smith - WSM 341689
PARISH TITHE MAPS
In recent years family and local history have become very a very popular pastime. Residents and visitors searching for data have increased the demand for access to these public documents. A year ago public access to census data and other records became available in local libraries through computers and the internet. This helped to reduce the pressure on the Public Record Library in Truro. The use of other documents and in particular, the tithe maps continues to grow. These maps which cover every Cornish parish are generally about six feet wide by ten feet long and date back to 1840. Each map is accompanied by a schedule of properties and their respective owners, and lists the tithe taxes which they had to pay to the authorities. They are old and fragile, and such frequent use can only cause permanent deterioration. To prevent further damage the record library is currently digitising all of these documents. Before each map is scanned it is painstakingly cleaned by the library staff so that the best quality images can be obtained. The intention is that eventually these records will be available on line through the internet. As an interim measure, as each parish is scanned the map becomes available on CD. The first of these can now be purchased through the record office and consists of one CD of the map and another for the accompanying schedule for each parish completed. County Councillor: Bob Booker
GAVIN & ALISON
As most of you will know Gavin and I leave the area around July 1st and are moving to Castle Bromwich village, where Gavin will have his own Parish. Many thanks to all who helped equip Tamsin and Ryan with toys, books, games, and clothes for their fostering venture it has been wonderful. They have a 13 year old girl who has been with them for 6 weeks and a couple of other children en passant so all has been used and much appreciated. It is perhaps now time to remove the 'Can you help?' request from the magazines. With many thanks again and we look forward to seeing you in the Midlands. Alison
RUBBISH ROADS
Plymswood, Week St Mary: What is the problem with a minority of the residents of Week St Mary? I have previously commented on the anti-social individual fly tipping his hedge trimmings in the woodland close to Collacott gate and by the water treatment works near Haydah farm. Now we seem to have an epidemic of litter-bugs, particularly the depositing of fast-food wrappers on the road between Treskinnick Cross and the village. Quite clearly the offending cretins are local and have access to a motor vehicle, otherwise they would
not be travelling the road at these times. I have, this morning, picked up chip wrappers from 'Tasty Place' in Bude. Obviously the contents were consumed en route and the wrappers dropped out of the car minutes before the occupants reached home. Over the last few months I have even picked up MacDonalds wrappers. Not bad as the nearest MacDonalds is at least 30 miles away. On that occasion they must have brought the wrappers all the way home just to dump them on the way to the village. Could the parents (if they themselves are capable of reading this) of these mindless morons kindly instruct their offspring to take their litter home and not spoil our countryside. Mike Graham (This is a personal view and not a reflection of the Parish Magazine)

RUMINATIONS FROM THE RECTORY
Late in from Deanery Synod, desperate for my bed, and two messages in Sue’s fair hand adorning my desk. One is from Shirley, the other Judith, both reminding me that tomorrow is the deadline for my contribution to their magazines! Throughout the day, despite the sunshine, it has been bitterly cold, sea winds cutting into the land, making a warm duvet a great enticement to ignore the urgency. Tomorrow, too, there will be an untimely rising and a brisk trot to chilly St Mary’s to celebrate an early mass. For tomorrow is the Feast of St Mark and throughout today, the eve of his celebration, the Gospeller’s pace seems to have been carried along on that fresh spring wind ending appropriately at Poundstock’s ancient Guildhouse. Appropriate because here, at our Deanery Synod, Fr Rob Yeoman’s impassioned presentation, ‘The Local Church in all its fullness’ carried all Mark’s swiftness and urgency. Mark’s first words are about a herald’s cry, his last words about the eleven “going out into all the world.” Fr. Rob’s are about ‘growing’ new ways of being the Church.
In the Rectory garden, too, everything is new growth. Down across the glebe field there is scarcely a bare bough in sight; it is the first full week of the greening and already the daffodils are nearly over. Under the distant trees that mark the entry to Swannacot Woods an opaque mist announces the arrival of the wild garlic, its flowers carpeting the woodland floor in their thousands. In the rectory garden we wait in anticipation of the bluebells and the red campion still to come. Similarly, Mark’s Gospel is unfinished yet full of eager expectation; “Stay awake!” is his message: “Wake up,” is Fr.Rob’s! Revd. Rob
WOMENS INSTITUTE
A busy month for our members began with our usual monthly meeting which was well attended. Members and visitors enjoyed the very interesting talk and slide show on the Bude Canal which was given by Gerald Fry. Gerald has been involved with the Bude Canal Trust since 1996 and his knowledge and hard work on this project was evident from his presentation. The following day, several of our members attended the CFWI Spring countdown meeting held at the Hall for Cornwall in Truro. It was a full and informative day ending with an excellent and entertaining talk by The Rt. Hon. Ann Widdecombe M.P. Lastly, a group of members enjoyed the hospitality of the Whitstone W.I. who hosted the Spring Group Meeting at the WMC. The other group members, Jacobstowe, North Tamerton and St. Gennys were all represented. Congratulations to two of our members, Joan Roberts and Joyce Orchard, who won and were placed in the Floral Arrangement and Rock Cake competitions. The evening continued with a talk and slide show by David Kennard. His tales of life as a sheep farmer with his wonderful dogs, including Mist who accompanied him, was highly entertaining. The evening concluded with a delicious buffet.
Our own meeting next month will be held on 21st May at the WSM Chapel Schoolroom and will start with our general business and resolutions. Our guest speaker, Lesley Booker, will give a talk on her recent visit to Umzimvubu, and this will commence at 8 p.m. All visitors are welcome to come along.
MISSION TO UMZIMVUBU DAIRY
When I was in South Africa in February, I kept a journal which contains details of what we did each day and what my main impressions were at the time. I thought that you may like to share some of those thoughts over the coming months. I will be giving a presentation to the WI at their May Meeting and I am sure that they would welcome any one who may like to come and see some of the pictures and video and talk about what black South Africa is like to visit.
21/02/08: …..set off for Mount Frere with many stops for looking at the fantastic scenery. David (Canon David Steven) is really enjoying
showing a small group around. The Buso’s (who visited us in 2006) Rectory is a low green place in the African style, very small and poorly appointed. Phyllis was trying to get to grips with a computer and I was able to help her to get onto the internet and connect to her skype phone system. She will be OK when she has more practice I expect. They have Egrets, Ibis and Weaver birds in a tree next to their house.
Today’s impressions were of how many people live in the place and how spread out they are. The little shacks are all brightly coloured but often in very poor repair. We saw some building going on but usually in the same style and all day I only saw one two story building. The place is literally crawling with thousands of children - all in school uniform. The main N2 which we travelled on had women every few hundred yards selling apricots or peaches in baskets. There were always people walking along the roads and sometimes off in the scrub beside the road. They were all going somewhere all day long. The main form of public transport is small mini buses which are all over the place. People also hitch rides and hold up a piece of paper with their intended destination written on it. The scenery and the weather were fantastic. We crossed the Mzimvubu river but there was no sign of the fabled hippopotami - not even very much water and two bridges, one new and one now out of use.
We left Rob and Jenny in very dubious conditions and I was glad to get back to Wendy’s B&B for a shower and a lovely dinner - I wonder how they will fare tonight? Rob left his sleeping bag behind – big mistake – no sheets!

now on in preparation for this year’s Smash. If you could store the china and deliver it to the field on the Revel Day that would be great. Any storage problems please telephone Len on 341513.

toys and music. This year it will start at 7 pm and will be held in the Square for a change. Further details will emerge as the planning
progresses.
WEEK ST MARY PARISH COUNCIL
The Parish Council Meeting took place on Monday 21st April 2008 under the chairmanship of Mr J Ward with 9 Councillors, the County Councillor, and 0 members of the public present. The following matters were discussed: Post Office: The Clerk has prepared information in case it is needed in a public consultation phase. Clerk to arrange for representatives from Postwatch and Post Office to attend meeting on 21st July, as the public announcement will be made on 15th July. Clerk to produce an article for the press based on the information compiled. Cornwall County Council will investigate maintaining those post offices scheduled for closure. The Post Office has said that once

Clerk to put out tender to match the existing Notice Board – in the Parish Magazine. Parish Hall - Bude & District Forum have given to the Parish Hall
Poor Man’s Piece – Trustees met to consider information from the Parish Plan and concluded that the land could not be gifted but might possibly be leased, though there are hurdles here too. Their feeling was that a communal garden was preferable to allotments as use of this land.
ADOPTION OF THE PARISH PLAN
The Parish plan is a record of the priorities established by the parish through consultation – and is evidence-based. By adopting the Plan,
the Parish Council is not committed to carry out everything, but will choose actions that it deems appropriate. It has already been useful in compiling information in support of the Post Office. The Summary of the Plan will be distributed to all households with the Parish Magazine. The longer document will be available to the Open Meeting, from Clerk and shop, and on the web site. The Parish Council will put the plan on the agenda for updates on actions taken. It was agreed to present the Plan at the Open Meeting. The following correspondence was dealt with:

Audit Commission the Annual Accounts, which had been inspected by the Internal Auditor, was approved. Notice has been displayed to electors of their right to examine the accounts in accordance with requirements; the accounts are available for inspection between 11April and 12 May 2008.

The siting should be near the top, not too close to the gate. Recycled plastic would be hardwearing and reasonably priced. At Week Green the bottom bar of the gate at Back Lane is smashed. WEEK ST MARY LADIES SKITTLES A&B
Congratulations to W.S.M. Mens Skittles B Team for being top of the 2nd division for the second year running. They will be looking forward to receiving their Trophies at the joint annual dinner to be held at Holsworthy Memorial Hall on 2nd May 2008. The Five Founder League Cup was held at Holsworthy Memorial Hall on 1st March where 6 team members with the highest average from the W.S.M. Ladies played through to the quarter finals. On 8th March the Challenge Cup was held at the same venue. Unfortunately the lower average team members were knocked out 1st game. Liz Cameron qualified to play in the individual cup game on 15th March.
The Ladies League Skittles ended on 20th March with Marian Smith being the highest scorer for that 4 week period and A team gathering 6 more points and B team 4 points, making W.S.M. A team joint 3rd in the league with Crown F and Holsworthy A with 48 points. W.S.M. B team were a little further down the table with 30 points, being 5th from the bottom. Aggregate position was 7th in the league.
Having been promoted to 1st division last season, it is not a disappointing result, and we look forward to more enjoyable and challenging evenings next season. Well done team members and good luck for 2008/2009 season. To complete the skittle season end members competed for our own club trophies, cups and plaques. A tournament cup donated by the late Lill Colwill was played for on 13th March and won by Julie Hodgson. The most improved average was Caroline Scott 5-84. The highest club average was Marian Smith 57-35, runner up was Caroline Nunn 54-57. The highest individual score was Marian Smith with 81. The lowest number of misses was also Marian Smith 1-69. Congratulations to all those players. Presentations will take place at the dinner. Finally many thanks for the support we have had and a big thank you to Nora Jewell, not only for her support but for being the scorer again.
If anyone in W.S.M. or district is interested in joining the Skittles Club please ring Marian Smith 01288 361284
WEEK ST MARY LADIES FC
Sunday 2nd March 2008: Penzance Res 4 - 0 Week St. Mary. Week St. Mary Ladies football team travelled to Penzance to play the Penzance Ladies Reserve team who had just won Division 3 of the Jaipur Cornwall League. This was their first friendly fixture since August 2007 and the first time they had played 45 minutes each way! The weather was mild and dry and the ladies had a good contingent of supporters to cheer them on. With usual goal-keeper Sharon Barriball out due to injury the home side allowed their ‘keeper Grace Rudlin to play for Week with Launceston/Cornwall player Tyler Matthews also guesting for them. The visitors started well and despite their lack of match experience their regular weekly training sessions paid off. The home side didn’t break the deadlock until half way through the first half, getting their second just before half-time. The midfield and defence were kept busy but made some good clearances. Week worked hard right until the end, despite being very tired, but they were unable to really test the oppositions ‘keeper. Penzance scored twice more in the second half to wrap up the victory. A creditable performance by Week against an experienced side, giving them valuable match practice and the impetus to want to play more fixtures.

THE CHURCH - DOG FOULING
The church paths and churchyard is becoming increasing spoilt by dogs fouling on the paths and on the graves which is very distressing and distasteful for relatives and people who use this part of the village for their walks. Keep your dog on a lead so you are in charge and know exactly what your pet is doing. There are many responsible dog owners who clean up after their pets but they are being let down by irresponsible people with their uncaring attitude. This is a beautiful part of the country to live in and we all need to look after the upkeep of the village, to keep it clean and a pleasurable place to live in. So all you owners who enjoy your walks please clean up after your dog and either take it home with you or use the dog bins that are provided in the village. Many thanks to the people in the village who have been doing their best to keep the church yard and village clean by picking up after other owners dogs. This is not a pleasant job I know.
