Issue No 247 - July 2008
FAREWELL TO REVD GAVIN DOUGLAS
Week St Mary Circle of Parishes bid the Reverend Gavin Douglas a fond farewell on Sunday afternoon with a special Evensong Service at Poundstock church followed by tea and presentation of gifts in the Guild House. Reverend Gavin was instrumental in securing the funding for the restoration of the Guild House at Poundstock and for the building of the Summer House at Widemouth Bay Church. His enthusiasm and commitment during his three year stay with us as Curate in training, has been a very productive and fulfilling mission and he and his wife Alison will be greatly missed. During the service, Reverend Gavin gave an interesting sermon in which he thanked the Rev Rob Dickenson for giving him the time and space to develop his ministry. Rev Rob wished them every success in their new Parish in Castle Bromwich where Rev Gavin will be installed as Rector on 11th July 2008. Week St Mary will particularly miss the sight of Gavin pounding along our lanes in his yellow running vest as well as his valuable contribution to our church services and community life. His caring concern for the elderly has been most appreciated in this parish as well as in those that he has worked most closely with. Alison also has taken a full part in the life of our village and has been a loyal choir member and staunch supporter of the WI. We all wish them Good Luck and Godspeed. Lesley Booker
REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY
I will shortly be ordering the annual wreath and poppies ready for November. A few years ago we started ordering wreaths with central badges depicting the regiments listed on the war memorial. These have now been covered and I was wondering if any one has a particular request for any other regimental badge. Also, is there any one who would like to lay the wreath or knows of anyone who would like to do so? If so contact Bob Booker on 341221
DISTRICT COUNCILLOR UPDATE
You will be offered a bribe shortly.
We generally think it won’t happen to us. The Post Office Ltd are being very ruthless in Cornwall. Especially rural areas and in this case it probably will happen to us. If you prefer odds how about 99% likely that both WSM and Whitstone close. The likelihood is that the ‘bribe’ for acceptance will be a mobile van that comes around 3 or 4 times a week. The hope is that local people will be accepting of this arrangement as they will see this as an acceptable alternative. Then the service is gradually reduced to 1 or 2 hours per
week. Finally, as in North Petherwin and others, the van service is cancelled because of lack of use.
Your Service Restricted.
The Postmasters in all the shops are not allowed to say anything about any proposed closure. If they do they will lose their compensation. Very nasty tactics indeed which stops us all from
reacting until the Post Office have all in place. Nastier still, is that closure offices cannot sell any competing products for 1 year. Key meter charge, lottery (because this is through the PO), bill payments, Parcel handling, the list goes on. I am not even sure that selling a book of stamps might be competitor products. Be under no illusion that the WSM Office closing will affect all of
us enormously.
Working together
The local parishes are working together to ensure the most proactive effort. I speak regularly to campaigners across the area and will support and fight for every office. You can be assured I will do everything possible to keep WSM office open. The Parish Council organised a fact-finding survey for a week. I work closely with Nicky May and the Parish Council and have only praise for their efforts. I will do anything I can to help her with this cause.
Anything Else
I would be pleased to help on any issue you may have. I would like to think I am very approachable. If you have a problem then please don’t hesitate to call me or email me. Phil Tucker 01288 341617

SAVE OUR POST OFFICE
Many thanks to all who have completed a questionnaire about the post office, to all those who helped on the rota, with printing, and to Tim Ward for lending us his trailer! We have had 393 completed questionnaires returned, which is a fantastic response. Let's hope this will help us to keep the post office and shop! Nicky May - Parish Clerk
TUDOR HOUSE AND OPEN GARDEN
A big thank you to everyone who, despite the decidedly iffy weather, supported our Open Garden. We raised a total of £492 to go toward projects in Umzimvubu e.g. feeding stations. If you were unable to make it on 21st June it’s not too late to make a donation – just pop an envelope with your donation through our door. Micheline and Stephen Smith
BRIDES REVISITED
Wow, what a wonderful exhibition of wedding dresses 'Brides Revisited' had to offer. It was fascinating to see such a beautiful collection of dresses throughout the decades from 1930 to 2008, and to think they were all worn by local people. It brought a tear to my eye I have to say! The event was so well organized and executed, I loved the music, the bell ringing, and the flowers, and reading the individual stories about people’s recollections of their special day, some had me in stitches! Well done Lucinda and everyone who helped to make the event such a success, I can’t wait for the next event whatever that might be. Thank you. Wendy Couch (Glanville House)
COUNTY COUNCILLOR REPORT
Cornwall Fire Service: Cornwall’s Fire Brigade have decided to purchase, a third aerial ladder platform. This has been financed within their existing budget. With three such platforms strategically placed within the county, the brigade’s access to this specialist equipment will be substantially improved.
Post Offices: The County Council’s community scrutiny committee are to have an extraordinary meeting on the 18th of July. This is to discuss the Post Office closure programme which is due to be announced for Cornwall on the 15th of July. This is to look at ways in which the county council may be able to protect any of the postal services which could be lost.
School Transport: Primary School Children are entitled to free school transport if their designated or nearest school is more than 2 miles away. For secondary schools the distance has to be more than 3 miles away. Parents who choose a school which isn’t their nearest or designated school are responsible for their children’s transport. Because a choice of schools can only be considered by those who can afford the transport, the government has introduced free school transport for secondary children up to 6 miles away if the family are in receipt of certain
benefits. This will improve parental choice for the less well off. Because the distances between Bude and Launceston secondary schools is greater than 12 miles, I can’t see any of our poorer
families being able to take advantage of this change. There are currently no changes to the transport policies for primary school children.
Cornwall County Council has an Education School Transport Appeal Panel. Family circumstances and finances can change during 6 years of a child’s primary education or 5 years of secondary education. A substantial number of appeals heard, are from parents who chose to send their children to a school which didn’t fit with the free school transport criteria and then later find difficulty with transport arrangements. The vast majority of these appeals fail as it was parental choice not to send their children to the designated or nearest school for which
transport would have been free if the school was outside of the appropriate distance. County Councillor: Bob Booker

RUMINATIONS FROM THE RECTORY
By the time you are reading this it is probably the beginning of July and several days past one of the important feast days of the Church which celebrates the ministry of the first Bishop of the Christian community, St Peter. Subsequently, it has become the traditional time for deacons and priests, the ‘white-collar’ workers of the church’s team, to be commissioned to their ministry by ordination.
Peter was well qualified for this in that he had received a very rigorous training for his ministry under the direction of Jesus himself. First, together with the other eleven, he was simply a companion; then they were sent out in pairs on a sort of ‘work experience’ mission; then, stage-by-stage, our Lord shared with them a much deeper theological teaching; all of this gradually leading up to the time when they would have to carry on his work without his visible presence. This, of course, is relevant to every one of us who is seeking God’s will for our lives by exercising a ministry to which we feel God is calling us, be it as a priest, a pastoral minister, a worship leader or a dedicated church cleaner.
Now, we are about to welcome a new full-time curate, into our community. James Rugg, who is thirty-one years of age, has spent three years of full theological and pastoral training for his vocation at Trinity College in Bristol. His wife, Fiona, and little daughter, Coco, have lived there with him and, you will be delighted to hear, there is another little Rugg due to arrive amongst us during the middle of August.
So why are they coming to us? Not simply that it’s a really busy place and the Rector could do with another pair of hands! Well, first, in their earlier visit to us, they found you all to be a warm and welcoming community of which they wanted to be a part. Secondly, it is a place that has been recognised by our Diocese as offering a real context for developing ministry, potentially equipping a curate with the skills and tools to rise to the challenge of other, maybe very different, ministries in the future. Sadly, of course, the end result is that curates then move on equipped for a ministry of their own, the potential of which has been recognised by the Diocese that offers the appointment. So, whilst we are saddened at our now losing the much-valued ministry of Rev Gavin as he moves on to
Castle Bromwich, it is vital that we now consciously provide opportunities for James’s growth towards also becoming an effective priest and pastor. This means that he will require a serious investment of our time and skills which, rather than merely reducing the workload of yours truly, will add a very stimulating and rewarding aspect to the lives of our churches. Moreover, this Parish is also known to ‘Truro’ as a place which really knows how to make people truly valued and supported, as Sue and I know only too well. So, over the next few months, let us do our level best to give James, Fiona and Coco the big welcome that their commitment to us
deserves as they adjust to the life and environment of our community. Revd Rob
WEEK ST MARY PARISH COUNCIL
The Parish Council Meeting took place on Monday 16th June 2008 under the chairmanship of Mr I Barriball with 7 Councillors, the District and County Councillors, and 3 members of the public present.
The following matters were discussed: DAN ROGERSON MP - Post Office
Post Offices are a major issue. Mr Rogerson will know a week ahead of public announcements in July about which post offices will close. Post Office say if a PO is saved another will go, though the Minister says not. Crucial information that should be gathered is: why the service is important; whether it is the last shop in the village; distance to nearest other facility; public transport; demographics (eg age of population and car ownership). It will be important to scrutinise Post Office figures that back their decisions, including whether N Cornwall closures are a higher percentage than elsewhere in the country: Mr Rogerson and NCDC should be able to help with this. Promises of “Outreach” services may be hollow as experience elsewhere suggests hours are reduced and services
subsequently withdrawn (eg just cancelled in North Petherwin). It was pointed out that no thought had been given to elderly and housebound people; homeworking and small businesses dependent on local post offices. There are very few precedents of success in overturning a closure decision. Looking to One Cornwall to subsidise post offices may not be the answer as it would put further pressure on adult social care budgets. Public transport may be a key issue – something for WSM to keep in mind as ERH Roadcar’s contract runs out in September and there is anxiety about keeping the minimal service we already have. If the Post Office stays open it will be all the more important to use it as there will be another round of closures in 2011.
REVEL It was agreed to allow the Revel to use the Square and the Green for the evening event

BRIDES REVISITED - THANKS
Congratulations to Lucinda, Hilda and team for putting on such a wonderful display. It must have been time consuming but very worthwhile. Thank you for giving us some pleasurable hours. Ron and Nora Jewell.
BRIDES REVISITED
On Thursday 29th May a four day event titled ‘Brides Revisited’ was held in our church. The criteria to exhibit was, married in our village church or chapel or resident in the parish, and married elsewhere. Forty nine brides came forward with their wedding dresses, photographs and personal items of their wedding day. The success of the exhibition has been greatly enhanced by Mrs Yvonne Heathfield who worked tirelessly with the exhibitors who chose to have some support in creating their displays. Yvonne gladly gave her time to assist in making this event a great success.
Mrs Pat Barriball created the floral displays in the church so as to set the scene for a wedding. Mr & Mrs David Martin created the exhibitors cards detailing the exhibit number and telling a story for each wedding day. We were entertained by various musicians in the church and the church bells were rung by many different teams. A cake icing demonstration was given each day by Ms Lorraine Webb “Sweet Dreams” wedding cakes and this was raffled and won by Mrs Sybil Dickenson. A bride’s bouquet was also kindly donated and raffled and won by Mrs Catherine
Stansfield. A children’s competition was also held and prizes given out during the family service. The mystery bride was identified as Mrs Wendy Couch, correctly guessed by Mrs Brenda Crocker-White and Mrs Vera Heard and a bottle of champagne was given as the prize. Mrs Sheila Cholwill also won a bottle of champagne for obtaining first prize for the quiz. On Saturday evening Tintagel Orpheus Male Voice Choir entertained us by an informal concert. Sunday afternoon Cream Teas were served by the ladies of the church and then Ray Shaddick Compered a Songs
of Praise at 7pm. The songs were chosen by couples who related a particular piece of music to their wedding day or their marriage.
The highlight of the evening was a solo by Mr George Jose ‘Love Changes Everything’. A very positive atmosphere was created and felt by all those who were involved in this event, and all those who visited the exhibition found it to be a most uplifting experience. We must not forget to thank all those who kindly sponsored this event and loaned mannequin’s for which we were very grateful. We must also show our appreciation to all those who exhibited and for all the helpers who worked tirelessly throughout this event. In total £1,400 was raised and this will go towards the repair of the Ancients Priest Vestry Door.

DEVON & CORNWAL POLICE AUTHORITY
The Devon and Cornwall Police Authority have regular Liaison Meetings Where the Public can Attend. The next local meeting in 2008 is North Cornwall: Wednesday 10th September 2008 at 7.30pm at the School Hall, Wadebridge Primary School, Gonvena Hill, Wadebridge, PL27 6BL. MAGAZINE EDITOR
I am pleased to say that after the annual Parish Council open meeting, two people came forward willing to take over from me as Editor of the magazine. Thank you to both concerned. I am pleased to announce that Dick Sowerby will be taking over from August. E-mails can be sent to the usual address, written copy can be given to Dick at Wentworth House or left with Jeff at the shop. Editor.
FIRST RESPONDERS
Following my appeal last month for interested people to contact me regarding increasing the number of trained First Responders in Week St Mary, I have to report that there is apparently no-one interested at all. This of course makes me very sad as the terrific support that the Responder group received at its inception has apparently dwindled to nothing despite the excellent results that we have had.
As a last ditch attempt to get some more people to take part, are there any employers in the village who would consider encouraging their staff to receive training and supporting them by allowing them to carry the equipment whist they are working? An emergency call never takes more than ½ to ¾ of an hour and this could be so important to one of our friends or relatives who have had a heart attack or accident.
I repeat – there are only 3 of us, two of those with very limited time available, so at present we only cover a maximum of 1/3 of the time in each week – it will be a miracle if we just happen to be on when something happens. With more people doing a little bit each, we will be able to cover a lot more of the time and maybe get somewhere near our target of 24/7 coverage. The initial training is the only difficult commitment in terms of time, but you will be equipped with that training for ever. PLEASE HAVE ANOTHER THINK ABOUT WHETHER YOU COULD DO IT. Please phone 341221 to have a chat. Lesley Booker
10k LONDON RUN & LONDON TRIATHLON
In memory of my son, Peter, I will be running the 10K London Run on July 6th, and the London Triathlon on the weekend of 9th/10th August. The Triathlon event consists of a 1 mile swim, 24mile bike sprint and a 6 mile run to the finish. I am doing this to raise funds for Epilepsy research and have put a sponsorship form in the Post Office for anybody who would like to donate their support to this cause which helps to fund important research into tackling epilepsy. If you would like to sponsor me and do not mind leaving your address on the sponsorship form, this ensures that all the money received will go to the charity and not the taxman! Please note that on Saturdays, my daughter Rebecca will be 'nagging' you all for sponsorship! Thank you for your support. Andrew Martin
ROBERT JOHNS LEUKAEMIA FUND
Bob Johns would like to thank all those who attended the Mousehole Male Voice Choir evening at Week St Mary Church on Sunday June 8th with special thanks to Peter Bromell (Bakery) for his continued support over the years to the fund and further special thanks for the use of the Chapel providing the tea for the choir and the ladies who prepared and served it. STRAWBERRIES AND CREAM - SUNDAY 22nd JUNE WEEK ST MARY
This annual event took place once again but because of the unpredictable weather it was held in the Parish Hall. Even so it was well supported. The strawberries tasted delicious as did the Cream teas which were also on the menu. The cake stall was well-supported. The inclement weather did not stop the crowd from chatting and socialising and we all had a good time, even the helpers who were kept busy.
A big thank you goes to all who willingly came and gave up their free time to help us and to all those who came and
supported us, especially Mr Peter Bromell for his generous contributions to the cake stall. Proceeds were for Week St Mary Church. Hilda and Margaret
