WEEK ST. MARY SCARECROW FESTIVAL
Booking Forms available from Clifton Tenement, in The Square. Raising Funds this year for our Parish Magazine and The New Community Centre.
The Theme for this year’s Scarecrow Festival is HEROES! Your heroes may be modern day sporting, film or political figures, historical characters, imaginary characters, TV & film stars, Story Book characters, Children's favourites, Pop Stars or personal icons. Let your imagination go wild! It IS NOT essential to stick to the theme but this is how the
Festival will be advertised and most participants prefer a theme to give them a new idea.
We are a popular annual event in many of our visitor’s diaries and deservedly famous for our Scarecrow Week. Please help us to maintain that popularity and join in with the most fun event that we ever hold in the Parish. Get your entry form in so that you can be added to the Scarecrow Trail.
WEEK ST. MARY BELLRINGERS OUTING 2007
The Ringers Outing proved to be a very enjoyable day once more and even the weather seemed to join in with the happy atmosphere for one this year!
We visited St Kea near Truro and then went on to Gwennap where the ringers had the opportunity to ring with a bell simulator. This meant that although they were ringing the bells as normal, only they could hear them ringing - an interesting proposition for anyone who doesn’t like the sound of practice nights! Whist we were ringing the passengers had a trip out to Gwennap Pit where John Wesley used to preach in the open air and then we all went
on to Crowan, Gwinear and Phillack. Here we met up with Chris Berry who used to be Head master at Jacobstow School. He sent me back with a message saying that he is just as mad as ever and still writing plays! It was great to see him again and he met several of his old acquaintances from his days in this part of Cornwall. We were also treated to an impromptu organ concert by John Hopkinson at Gwinear. The day ended with us practically taking over Barneys Fish and Chip Restaurant in Wadebridge and all arrived home fat and full. Many thanks once again to Stephen Tilley for getting us around and home safe and comfortable. Lesley Booker - Tower Captain
We have time after August to start teaching ringing again. Suits all ages over 11 and reasonably fit. Please phone 01288 341221. We really need people who are willing to commit to supporting the service ringing on a reasonably regular basis so if you would like to learn this ancient and lifelong skill get in touch WSM 341221.

RUMINATIONS FROM THE RECTORY
The Acts of the Apostles is a tremendously exciting account of the travels of the first disciples of Christ throughout middle Europe and parts of Asia Minor. In their quest to go out into the world and baptise all people in Christ’s name, they met dangers and hardships which make Bruce Willis’ ‘Die Hard 4’ look like a Disney cartoon. When Paul and Silas were thrown into prison in the Roman city of Philippi, there was a terrible earthquake that wrecked the building and left great holes in the walls. The gaoler, believing that his prisoners had escaped his custody, was about to commit suicide when Paul appeared to show that they had not run away. The gaoler was so impressed by their confidence in their God’s protection that he asked them how he, too, could become a Christian.
Paul’s answer was so simple as to be almost unbelievable. “All you have to do is to believe in the Lord Jesus,” he said, “and you will be saved, you and all your household.” So, invited by the gaoler, Paul and Silas went home with him and baptised his whole family. Notice, he didn’t say you have to go to church on Sundays, or join the PCC, or become an Anglican, or a Methodist, or a Baptist, or a member of any other exclusive Christian club that you care to name; just “Believe in the Lord Jesus.”
Is it really that simple? Yes - the first step to faith is simply to say that you are prepared to try and believe. Not that you know, or that you have had proved to you, but that you are prepared to take that leap of faith that believing in something or someone is all about. And that is all that Baptism is - a gift in return for your saying, simply, “I believe.” In the days of the early church, only those who could speak for themselves were baptised; today, of course, when little children are baptised, someone else says, “I believe,” on their behalf. That is why, later on, when they are old enough to speak for themselves, they are offered confirmation, because when we confirm something we say, “Yes.” to our Lord’s call to try to follow him on our journey through life.
On Sunday 30th September, Bishop Roy will come to Week St Mary to confirm anyone who seeks the support of Jesus
Christ during the rest of that Christian journey, whether they have been previously baptised or not. Usually, this would take place at Truro Cathedral, so this is a rare, once-in-a-blue-moon opportunity for baptism-and-confirmation by our own Bishop, in our own parish. In preparation for this, a number of one-hour informal discussion sessions are being held at Week St Mary Rectory on Thursday evenings towards the end of August and the beginning of September (See boxed advertisement). They are appropriate for anyone old enough to speak for themselves during which we can have a cup of tea, a few biscuits and the opportunity to ask questions and have things simply explained. For those who would like to join these sessions there is no pressure or commitment to be confirmed unless, at the end, you really wish to do so. If you, or anyone you know, young or old, is interested, please ‘phone 01288 341134 and book your place. Canon Rob
VISITOR FROM UMZIMVUBU!
As you may remember, last November, we had staying in our village two visitors, Archdeacon Vuyani and Mrs Phyllis
Buso from Umzimvubu in South Africa. One of the main concerns of the Buso’s ‘back home’ is to provide for the HIV/Aids orphans who populate their twentyeight parishes (yes, twenty-eight!). Apparently there are no fewer than three hundred orphans in each parish, many of them without visible means of support. We sometimes talk about being hard up but, really, we don’t truly know what poverty is until we encounter people like the Busos.
When they left we sent them off with, amongst other things, a wonderful quilt presented to them by the Week St.
Mary Quilting Group and which they now treasure as a symbol of all the wonderful kindnesses they enjoyed while they were with us. Because of the hospitality they received while they were here we have been asked if we would welcome, for a period of two weeks and as part of his training package, a young priest from their archdeaconry whose name is Msikayise (umzee-key-aysee) Fodo. He will be at large in our village from the 11th until 25th August so, if you see him, please make him feel welcome by giving him a wave and a smile. He also speaks good English (though with a strong accent), so if you have any special events or meetings to which you would be prepared to
invite him as part of his experience of life in a Cornish community please would you let me know.
Revd Rob (341134)

RECIPE OF THE DAY #2 - LEMON YOGHURT CAKE - serves 10-12
CAKE: 125g butter; 220g caster sugar; 2 eggs lightly beaten; 250ml Greek style yoghurt; 3 tbsp lemon juice; 1 tbsp finely grated lemon rind; 300g S.R flour; ½ tsp bicarb of soda
Greased 9” loose bottomed cake tin. Pre-heat oven to 180c/gas mark 4.
SYRUP: 80g granulated sugar; 125ml water; 3 tbsp lemon juice; zest of 1 lime.
Cake: Place butter & sugar in a bowl & beat until light & fluffy. Add eggs & beat well. Stir in remaining ingredients i.e. yoghurt, lemon juice, finely grated lemon rind, flour & bicarb until combined. Spoon into the greased cake tin & bake for 45 mins or until cooked when tested with a skewer.
Syrup: Place ingredients in a small saucepan & stir over a low heat until sugar has dissolved. Simmer for 4 mins & slowly drizzle hot syrup over hot cake whilst still in the tin. Leave to stand for 5 mins & then serve with a dollop of yoghurt or serve cold.
RECIPE OF THE DAY #3 - CURRIED CHICKEN MAYONNAISE - serves 6 as main course or serve as part of a buffet.
1 x 4lb chicken cooked & diced; 4oz button mushrooms (or sliced white closed cup); 1 tbsp cooking oil; 1 small onion peeled & chopped; 1 tbsp curry powder (strength according to taste); ¼ pt chicken stock; 1 tbsp apricot jam or mango chutney; 1 tbsp tomato puree; ½ pt mayonnaise; 3 tbsp single cream.
Heat the oil in a small saucepan & fry onion until soft. Stir in the curry powder & cook for a couple of minutes. Add stock, tomato puree & chutney, stir & simmer for 5 mins. Sieve into a large bowl & leave to cool. Stir in mayonnaise & cream, add chicken & mushrooms. The ingredients for this are very versatile i.e. use more mushrooms than chicken for a more economic meal. Use more tomato puree less curry powder for a sweeter taste. Add sultanas or cashews etc.
WEEK ST MARY PARISH COUNCIL
The Parish Council Meeting took place on Monday 23rd July 2007 under the chairmanship of Mr J Ward with 9 Councillors, Phil Tucker District Councillor and Bob Booker County Councillor, and 0 members of the public present.
Prior closed meetings were held on 18th & 26th June & 2nd July regarding the Land adjacent to the playing field, copies of the minutes are available from the Parish Clerk Nicky May.
The following matters were discussed:-
Electoral Roll: A list of errors will be compiled and sent to NCDC
County Tree Officer: Tree protection is a District matter but NCDC have sub-contracted County to provide an advisory service. There are three main routes to tree protection: within a conservation area there is protection of trees with a diameter of roughly 4-6 inches. 6 weeks’ notice should be given for felling, removal or work on trees, unless dead, dying or dangerous; tree preservation would have to prove amenity value of the tree; Short-term protection through Planning Control.
Land adjacent to playing field and NCDC Loan Agreement
1. The field had been purchased at auction for £38000
2. It was agreed to allow James Smeeth to use the field until the autumn this year, in return for the field’s maintenance of grass and hedges, and drains if possible. If by then work on the playing field is not ready to start, the letting of the field would be put out to tender.
3. The Public Works Loan Board terms are unfavourable, with interest at least 5.95% and early repayment penalties.
4. The NCDC loan agreement has come through as follows: sum borrowed £39,000 over 20 years repayable in equal half-yearly instalments of the principal with the following interest rates:1st 5 years - interest free; 2nd 5 years - 2% below the base rate; 3rd 5 years- 2% above the base rate, and no early repayment penalty
5. Thanks are due to all Parish Council members, NCDC, Mr Phil Tucker, and CALC for their assistance.
It was noted that Helen Davies of Peter Langsford Davies has been appointed as the solicitor acting for the Parish Council. Allianz Cornhill had confirmed by phone that the land was covered by the insurance policy from the date of the auction. Both Mr Bob Booker and Mr Phil Tucker congratulated the Parish Council on a superb achievement.
Parish Hall: The Community Centre Committee will meet on 9th August 7.30pm in the Parish Hall
Playing Field: Hedge trimming should be done after 1st August. Mr R Harris will ask Kevin Johns to undertake it
Insurance: the Parish Council is covered for public liability for any organisation or member of the public using the playing field and the village green, provided that reasonable care has been taken. The Weekly Audit of the Playing
Field was seen as very good practice.
The BRIPS had been an excellent day. Clerk to write letters of thanks to Mr S Smith, the Police, and the Co-op, and to Lesley Booker for photos.
Football Club. – will be converting the back of the Parish Hall as temporary changing facilities. Pearce Construction are providing materials. The Football Club are determined to make a nice job of the conversion even though temporary. They have acquired a weatherproof container in which to store the equipment that will be displaced by the conversion.

PURCHASE OF LAND ADJACENT TO THE PLAYING FIELD
Many parishioners will be aware that the Parish Council recently bought at auction on behalf of the parish a three-acre field adjacent to the Playing Field. There were a number of reasons the Parish Council saw this purchase as an investment for the community:
The football pitch can be moved to run north-south, creating more space on the existing playing field for a new community centre and associated parking. Additional space is created on the existing playing field for other facilities e.g. an all-weather replacement for the tennis court.
The views to the north coast from the playing field can be protected. The field offers potential for the creation of a wildlife and conservation area, perhaps incorporating a circular walk. Within the overall community centre scheme, it is hoped there is scope for housing for local people on the site of the Parish Hall. All of these ideas are subject to consultation, planning and in the case of the Parish Hall, a parish vote. The auction came a lot quicker than we would have chosen but the timing was not within our control. It was regretted by the Parish Council that a number of meetings in run-up to the auction had to be held in closed session. This was due entirely to commercial sensitivity and not giving advance information to other interested bidders or the auctioneers. The Council has now voted to make the minutes of these confidential sessions available for inspection along with our usual minutes. £38,000 is a lot of money for a three-acre field. Clearly others also thought the field had significant amenity value. In the context of a possible new community centre, the investment is not so large. The purchase will be funded by a loan agreed with North Cornwall District Council. It will be a capital and interest loan repayable over 20 years. The loan is interest-free for the first five years, 2% below base rate for the next five years and 2% over for the final ten years. There are no early repayment penalties. We have gone for a long term loan to keep payments affordable should the worst-case scenario happen and none of our plans come to fruition. In practice, we hope the loan will not last the full coarse. With the current level of precept covering some one-off items of expenditure that will not reoccur and by achieving some other costs savings, we consider the long-term impact of this purchase on the precept will be relatively small. The exact detail of costs will be available through the Parish Council minutes in due course. The purchase would not have been possible without the help of a number of organisations who responded quickly and positively – North Cornwall District Council, Cornwall Association of Local Councils and the Department of Communities and Local Government. North Cornwall District Council in particular has been very supportive throughout. We hope you agree that this was an investment in our community that had to be grasped if we could. The Parish Council.
BUDE RURAL INTER PARISH SHIELDS
After the disappointment of the weather induced postponement the previous week, the BRIPS family fun day and 5-a-side football tournament took place on Saturday 21st July on WSM’s playing field. Although menacing clouds were racing by on all sides, we kept dry and conditions turned out to be ideal for football. Special thanks to Ivor Barriball, Mike Caesar-Gordon, Ron Jewell and John (Wilf) Willis for all their hard work in defying the elements and preparing the pitches so that the “stadium” really looked the part.
20 of our youngsters were among the 125 or so children and teenagers from local parishes who played in almost 5 hours of continuous football. As well as competitions for the Juniors, Colts and Seniors, a game for “Minis” also took place, so there were children aged from 4 upwards to 17 involved. All those who took part received a certificate.
Morwenstow parish swept the board winning the main shields for all three competitions. Our Junior team won a thrilling penalty shoot-out in their first match but then lost narrowly in the semi-final. The Colts went down against tough opposition in their opening game and then were then eliminated in the semi-final of the Plate competition. Our senior team (Jake Colwill, David Middleton, Jamie Gabbitas, Dan and Rob Pearce and Sam Powell) came third overall in their competition and won the Plate shield, which is on display in Jeff’s shop.
The organisers would like to thank all those from Week St. Mary who gave their time to make the first event of the BRIPS programme such a success, including our resident Harvest Queen Rebecca Cartwright and the commentator Mike Goodman. “Off-field” activities included tombola, target football, beat the goalie and a trivia quiz. Refreshments were provided by WSMFC. The Robert Johns Leukaemia Fund had a display desk and a donation is being made by BRIPS from proceeds taken on the day. The next BRIPS event will be a Fun Run hosted by Whitstone in the autumn. Stephen Smith

SURVEY RETURNS PLEASE!!!
As you may be aware, last month I handed out a series of questionnaires to selected households in the village. I would like to say a big "thank you" to those who have already returned completed questionnaires - I really appreciate your input on the subject area; your time and help will contribute towards an under-researched academic study area and, also, with my master's dissertation.
For those who have yet to complete a questionnaire - your input would be gratefully received - it will take a few minutes to fill out, and personal details will be kept strictly confidential. Complete questionnaires can be returned to myself at Angor Chyf House or, if so required, the Post Office. Once again, thank you so much for your time and help. Chris Martin.
