Issue No 290 - February 2012

VERY URGENT REMINDER ~ WEEK ST MARY REVEL (15th September 2012)
The date for Revel is set, but at present there is no committee to organise this important Community Fund Raising Day. Most of the community organisations in the parish receive a substantial income from the event, so it is vital that a new organising committee is formed as soon as possible.
The day does not just happen by itself but is planned over a series of meetings starting in February. To express interest and support, please attend a public meeting to be held in the Parish Hall at 7.30 pm on Monday 27th February. The old committee are on the whole willing to support if asked but will no longer be responsible for the organisation of this event.
If a new committee is not formed, the Revel Day may no longer be of benefit to all as it has been for the past 14 years.

COUNCILLOR'S REPORT
Buses:
We have about 84 tendered bus services (some may have a few routes in one tender) in Cornwall. Around half of these are unaffordable with the budget set and it is this, including the free bus pass that makes the bus provision, as it stands, unworkable. A suitable response is not simply that the budget then is too low and to add more to the budget. It is not suitable because next year the problem would be worse and what is needed is a sustainable model which deals with the problem, target needs and has the buy-in of all parties. Certainly the majority of people (service users) who I have spoken to have said that the most important thing is to keep the service. One said she recently gave up her car (which she estimated was costing her £1500 per year for all costs) and had started using the bus and that it was odd that she could travel free, financed by those not using the bus. She asked the question why couldn’t there be a small charge for using the bus, nothing else is free and if she was driving no one was offering insurance free or zero depreciated vehicles? It will probably be of no surprise to readers, to know that rural buses are least affordable and lose most money. It is however the rural bus services which affect people the most. I have written before and will repeat at every opportunity to Councillors and Officers, that urban changes affect more people but rural changes affect people more. Rural buses are vital in our villages and by working together we can maintain bus services. The irony to some extent is, holiday makers can use the free bus service to travel around Cornwall which is good in that it encourages less use of their cars but it is being paid for by the Cornwall council tax payer. The free journey is charged to the council where a passenger gets on the bus, so a holiday maker in Boscastle who fancies a trip to Truro is paid for by a retired person who rarely uses the bus. Therefore at cabinet, it is proposed that a small charge of 50p for every journey would make this service sustainable. The Cabinet are also proposing adding £1.2 million per year to the transport budget for two years in order to support these plans until they come to fruition. I hope you think that this is a good outcome and can see that a small charge benefits all. It keeps the service and provides a sustainable future. Cllr Phil Tucker. If you have concerns, as with any issue whatsoever, please give me a call on 01288 341617 or philip.tucker@homecall.co.uk.

This is a time for fun and ‘eating up’ before Lent begins the next day, Ash Wednesday. A very warm and yummy welcome awaits all those from across the benefice who would like to come. Looking forward to seeing you!

JACOBSTOW SCHOOL - PLYMOUTH PANTOMIME 2012
The children at Jacobstow Community Primary School and Preschool had a great afternoon on January 6th when they made their annual trip to Plymouth to see this year’s pantomime, Cinderella. The children were agog to see the very ugly sisters in their outrageous costumes, the very decadent Dandini, played by Julian Clary, the very silly Keith Harris with Orville the duck and of course the beautiful Cinders and her very handsome Prince Charming. It was a very traditional pantomime, ‘Oh no it wasn’t!’, ‘Oh, yes it was!’ and thoroughly enjoyed by all. What better way could there be to start our new year with some live theatre. Many thanks to the Friends of Jacobstow School who funded the £400 coach bill and, to the parents for their support of this fun time out.

WEEK ST MARY BENEFICE & CIRCUIT WOMENS’ WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
Written by the Christian women of Malaysia - St Mary’s Church, Week St Mary at 2.30 pm Friday 2nd March. Refreshments afterwards. All are welcome and encouraged to join us.

WEEK ST. MARY BELLRINGERS - Anyone out there??
What's that noise? Well if it's Wednesday evening or Sunday morning - it's probably Week St Mary Church Bells! The bell ringers practice on Wednesdays from 7.30 so that they can ring before every church service for 30 minutes - so if you hear the bells, there's probably a service starting when they stop.
Our village is changing all the time as people move in and out and some of you may not know that bell ringing is not a thing you are born doing or born to do. It is a great team sport, a great way to keep fit, to feel that you have really achieved something (when it goes right, which it doesn't always!), a good way to meet people and also a fantastic way to give service to your community. Our tower is a very welcoming and open place, the door's only shut to keep the draught out. Why not come and bang on it one day when we are there and we will show you what goes on and teach you to ring if you want to. Don't expect to learn in one evening though - if you really want to do it, it will take time and effort (some of it physical effort, but even quite weedy people can manage) and the major thing you'll need is determination.
Yes, we will probably laugh a lot together but at the end of it all you'll have a skill that you can take anywhere in the country to enjoy the art. All we ask is that you commit to supporting service ringing on a fairly regular basis once you are a good enough ringer. The more there are of us, the less of a chore this is - but actually once you know how to ring, you'll find that you will take every opportunity to do so - that's why there's so much noise on Wednesdays and Sundays, special occasions and days out!!
For more information come to the tower on a Wednesday night from 7.30 or ring the Captain, Lesley Booker on 01288 341221. We look forward to seeing you.

CRITICAL LENT with pancakes!

WEEK ST MARY METHODIST CHAPEL
Presents 'LOVENY' Male Voice Choir with Guest Soloist Alexa Richardson and Chairperson Anne Rowe on Saturday 4th February at 7.30pm. Entrance £6 including Supper, in Aid of Chapel Funds.

MESSY CHURCH
The ecumenical Messy Church based at Week St Mary has gone from strength to strength since it started at the beginning of 2011 with more than a dozen regular families attending on a Sunday evening every two months amounting to at least 22 children at every session and a total of 40 people sitting down to tea afterwards. These families come from Week St Mary and other parishes in the Benefice and we welcome any who would like to try a new, fun way of learning about worship and the Christian way of life.
The Messy Church helps children to explore the theme for the day through craft activities that give them the opportunity to try out various skills and learn craft techniques. They also talk about the reason for their activities with the adults who help them at each station, to sing some worship songs and to learn to pray together. The evening is rounded off with a tea for everyone involved. The cost is as much or as little as you like as a contribution towards the food and craft materials.
The team who have been running the Messy church work very well together and the families who attend enjoy the sessions very much. It is easy for anyone to drop in to visit and show their support and we would love more members of the community (whether they be church or chapel based or from other churches or none) to do this from time to time. There are many opportunities to help or to watch and enjoy the enthusiasm of the children and their parents from this parish and other places in the local area, even perhaps just joining us for tea. This is a wonderful way to get to know the children that we see around the village (and from further away) every day and for them to feel part of our community.

STRATEGIC HOUSING LAND AVAILABILITY ASSESSMENT
Cornwall Council is currently undertaking a call for potential housing sites as part of the review of the Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA). We are looking for sites anywhere in Cornwall that:
• Have the potential for accommodating at least 5 dwellings (gross) or 0.1 hectares for housing; and
• Are located outside of a designated SAC, SPA, SSSI or Flood Zone 3b.
Further details on the call for sites is available online at www.cornwall.gov.uk/shlaa. A separate signed form (completed as far as possible) and site plan must be provided for each site. Submissions can be made electronically to cornwallldf@cornwall.gov.uk or to the following address:
Cornwall Council, Planning and Regeneration, Carrick House, Pydar Street, Truro, Cornwall TR1 1EB.
The deadline for submitting details of a site that you would like us to consider is 5pm on Friday 24th February 2012. If you have any queries or require a hard copy of the form please do not hesitate to get in touch. It is important to emphasise that a site's inclusion in the SHLAA does not imply that it will be made available for housing. The SHLAA is a technical study and not a policy document. It will identify possible housing sites and assess overall housing potential to support the development of the Core Strategy as part of the evidence base. The SHLAA is a public document and details submitted for inclusion in it can be treated as public information.

PARISH HALL
We will be celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Week St Mary Parish Hall during April/May 2012. Over the years the Hall has been a great asset to the village and we feel that it would be appropriate to mark this occasion. The committee are in the process of formalising a suitable event and will announce the actual date later. Watch this Space?

VOLUNTEER HOST FAMILIES NEEDED THIS SUMMER
Chernobyl Children’s Life Line will be inviting another group of children to spend three or four weeks in North Cornwall during July/August. These children will come from areas still badly contaminated with radioactive material from the nuclear explosion at Chernobyl 26 years ago. We shall need more host families than ever this year. CONFIRMATION PREPARATION
During Lent, at the end of February and through March, Confirmation classes will be offered at Week St Mary Rectory, on Tuesday evenings from 7.30 – 9.00 pm. This will lead to those who have attended, if they wish, to be confirmed by Bishop Tim shortly after Easter. It is possible, also, that a parallel course will be offered after school especially for any younger people (that is, in their teens) who are also considering Confirmation. There will be no pressure at the end of the course for you to be confirmed so, if you are at all interested, please contact Revd Rob on 01288 - 341134 A.S.A.P.!

FROM THE WEEK ST MARY CORRESPONDENT
January - it’s a bit wet and grey this year, isn’t it? As I was negotiating the muddy lane between our house and the village proper this morning it seemed as if it was never going to get light and this cloud would never lift. Then, a flash of brilliant gold caught my eye, gorse bursting forth from the hedge, I started paying more attention to the hedgerow and less to the road (apologies to the guy in the tractor coming the other way) and there were the first few tiny brave snowdrops and the thick green shoots promising daffodils. Beautiful, promising and uplifting.
I will not bore you by covering the crib service which took place on Christmas Eve as it has already had an excellent write up in last month’s magazine, but I just want to say that it was the first I have attended and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We thought we were early but as we pulled into the square it seemed every door was opening, whole families were tumbling out, drawn by the church which clanged its merry welcome through that cold dark winter night. We had a few friends with us who were not from the village; they were impressed by the warmth of village spirit, the beautiful service and the gifts for the woman’s refuge. So thanks must go to Rev Rob and his merry gang of diligent ladies who make it possible and who know the sheep from the wise men, when to send the shepherds down the aisle and how to pacify the beautiful but fun filled angels!
A fierce wind was sweeping through the village when the South Tetcott hunt met at Greenamoor on the 5th January. We huddled in the shelter warmed by John and Milly Dennis’ fine spread and warm hospitality. Many were there catching up on events over the festive period. Five riders were braving the weather lead by huntsman Paul Martin, with a fair number of welly clad foot followers in their wake. They clattered from the yard, horses and hounds eager for the off and it was nice to see John Dennis out on his new horse. As the last horse turned the corner the weak winter sun broke through the grey clouds turning the day into a beautiful one.
Although not strictly my patch, but by virtue of the fact that I have been asked three times if I would cover it and by the number of Week St Mary residents I saw there, I will mention that the Tetcott Hunt met at Whitstone shop on the 19thJanuary. It was a much warmer day which resulted in the turnout of 16 or so riders. Master Di Stevens was leading the hunt but unfortunately I caught little of what she had to say as the hounds were in such good voice! The meet marked Gordon Duke’s 80th Birthday and the man himself was in the saddle – there seems to be something in the local water which keeps these more senior members of our community in such excellent condition that they are still out hunting in their more autumnal years!
As always, if you would like me to pop along to your event so I can do a write up for the Cornish and Devon Post please contact me, Rosie Ireland, on 01288 341546 or email: pim.pom@btinternet.com
