COUNCILLOR'S REPORT
Your wellbeing is important to the
authorities and it should be important
to you. Looking after, as I do, a very
rural Division is generally a joy. Crime
and vandalism levels are low.
Anti-social behaviour is generally
restricted to moving pockets and is by
and large, the product more of isolated
neighbourly tiffs than anything else.
Usually these tiffs emanate from parking
disputes, ex-partners families or indeed
something that happened 65 years ago
between the grand parents and has been
resurrected for some reason! Living
together in a community will put
pressures on relationships and genuine
arguments will occur as they do in
families. People inherently want to ‘get
on’ and generally after the air has been
cleared, good relationships continue.
However, sometimes these tiffs get
escalated by one party and can develop
into bullying, harassment and very
occasionally violence. Nuisance doesn’t
have to come from a dispute. The
neighbours can be irresponsible
regarding noise and not show the respect
due to a neighbour who perhaps has to
sleep during the day or night because of
shift work. Hedges, perhaps grown to
heights where the neighbour loses light
or, music played either intentionally or
unintentionally too loud.
I would like to remind the readers of
this article that they have a right to
live without fear. They have a right to
sleep or indeed to relax without severe
interruption and if the reader is
suffering harassment or implied
harassment then there are options open
to them. The Council has a duty to look
after your wellbeing to a point and
certainly where there is an
environmental disturbance such as smell
or noise there are specialist teams who
will advise you on options.
Just talking about the problem can help.
It certainly doesn’t have to be
confrontational in any form initially
and indeed any decisions would always be
yours.
The last subject is a tricky one but I
will press on as best I can. If your
partner is violent towards you or your
family, even if you think it is to a
minor degree or just threatening (and
the partner can be male or female), then
the first thing I would like to say is
that the situation is not going to
improve in the long term. Your partner
is not going to suddenly not be violent
towards you. In rare cases the violence
will not increase but generally it will
suddenly escalate and usually
completely, massively and totally out of
your control. If I can get one message
across to these readers, please talk to
the professionals. As I said earlier the
choice of what you ultimately do is
yours, but to share the problem with a
trained professional is the one thing
you owe to yourself and your family.
The last really important message is
that you are not unique if you have any
of these problems and you do have a
choice and a chance to retake control of
your wellbeing. The Cornwall Council
enquiries line is 0300 1234 100.

TITANIC - A PERSONAL REFLECTION
The Anniversary and Centenary of the
sinking of the Titanic is of particular
interest to me as two members of my
family were lost in the tragedy. The
Dennis family were living at Leigh Farm,
Week St Mary at the time.
My father Lewis Dennis was one of a
family of five. He had two older
brothers, William and Samuel and two
sisters Jane (who married William Smale)
and Olive (who married Bert Dinnis). My
father married Annie Orchard of
Plymswood.
The New World, as it was known, was
opening up in the Americas and Canada
and a great number of English people
were emigrating to start a new life. As
far as I know, from what is recorded in
history, blocks of land, approximately
600 acres, were made available to
settlers who would have to clear the
land and cultivate it.
A farm the size of Leigh could not
support three young men and so the older
of the three brothers Samuel and William
grasped the opportunity to go to Canada,
as so many others did at the time, to
continue farming.
If everything had gone to plan, our
family would have had an extended family
in the New World. So this is a very sad
time for our family. We cannot change
history, but if they had not decided to
emigrate the outbreak of the First World
War would soon occur, the anniversary of
which will be in two years. No doubt
they would have had to enlist, as farm
workers were not exempt from service in
that war – and then, would they have
survived the greatest bloodbath in
history? And so, with this I pay my
respect to the two uncles I never knew
(I was not born until 1930) but know
will always be in my heart. Ron
Dennis

LOCAL HOUSING NEEDS SURVEY
The Parish Council and Cornwall
Council Affordable Housing Team will
shortly be doing a housing needs survey
in the parish. You will be sent a
questionnaire to fill out and return.
IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT THAT
EVERYONE RESPONDS so that we
can be sure that we have a fully
representative view of what the whole
Parish wants to see, in terms of more
housing being built in the village.
We hope that someone from the Affordable
Housing Team will come to the Annual
Parish Open meeting at 7.30pm on Tuesday
17th April. Do come along then and hear
more about it. Nicky May –
Parish Clerk
RUBBISH & RECYCLING COLLECTIONS
Commencing 1st April both rubbish and
recycling will be collected on a
Wednesday. Rubbish will be collected
weekly commencing Wednesday 4th April
and Recycling fortnightly commencing
Wednesday 11th April. By now every
household should have been issued with a
box and three reusable recycling bags,
together with a leaflet explaining the
new system. Anyone who has not received
these should call 0300 1234 141.
Cornwall Council have also introduced a
garden waste service which will be
collected fortnightly commencing
Wednesday 4th April. Households wishing
to subscribe to this service should call
0300 1234 141.
Whilst on the subject of green waste
collection - it has come to our
attention that some in the village
prefer to throw their grass cuttings
over a party fence or wall rather than
disposing of it responsibly - why not
make use of the Green Waste Collection
and keep our village a cleaner and
tidier place to live in ?
SINKING OF THE R.M.S. TITANIC –
14th April 1912
The loss of the White Star Liner RMS
Titanic needs no real introduction today
- even if you are not old enough to
remember it as a point of history at
least the epic film of the same name
will live on. It was on its maiden
voyage in 1912 when it suffered a
glancing blow from an iceberg at around
11:40 p.m. on 14th April 1912 causing
some watertight compartments to be
ruptured. At around 2:20 a.m. the
following day, 15th April, the ship
sank. Of the 2,228 passengers and crew
on board, 1,518 lost their lives. Some
four hours later, the RMS Carpathia
arrived on the scene and began the grim
task of recovering survivors and bodies.
A Samuel Dennis, 23, born on 17th June
1889 at Treyeo Farm in the North
Cornwall parish of Launcells, was the
son of William Henry Dennis (farmer) and
Mary Arabella Dennis (née Sobey). He was
the younger brother of Elizabeth, Olive
and William. He is known to have had a
younger brother also born at Treyeo. By
1894 the family had moved to Leigh Farm,
Week St. Mary. It was from here that
Samuel set out on his fateful journey.
Samuel had been encouraged to emigrate
to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada by
his relatives Lewis Richard and Owen
Harris Braund of nearby Bridgerule,
Devon. The Braund's had a relative
Leonard Lovell already in Canada and it
was to him they were all ultimately
travelling on Titanic.
Samuel, with the Braunds, his brother,
William Dennis (born in 1886 in the
village of Ashbury, Devon) and relatives
John Hall Lovell (of Ashbury, Devon) and
John Henry Perkin (of Holsworthy, Devon)
all embarked Titanic at Southampton
after a long train journey from North
Cornwall.
The party were also accompanied by Miss
Susan Webber, a family friend of nearby
North Tamerton, Cornwall. Samuel was
travelling in third class and it is
likely that he shared a cabin with John
Lovell. His ticket was probably obtained
from the Bude White Star agent, Mr.
Hawking. Samuel and William Dennis were
both lost in the sinking of RMS Titanic.
In some local records the family is
listed as Dinnis, a common alternative
spelling. David Martin

FAIRTRADE COFFEE MORNING
A big thank you to everyone who
supported and managed the stalls and
refreshments for this annual event in
Week St Mary held, as always in the

produced ethically offering a lifeline
to many in remote villages throughout
the world. There was a good crowd and
convivial atmosphere, so once again,
thank you for your company and support.
